| Resumo | Mapping human presence and its activity, expressed by urbanized or built areas, is elementary to study the territory dynamic and evolution, especially when concerning scenarios for sustainable development for the Amazonian region. In the scope of projeto Cenários, this work describes a remote sensing approach based on medium resolution imagery to identify and to map urbanized areas in the west of Pará, Brazil. Landsat TM5 images from BR-163 Distrito Florestal Sustentável area were first geocoded. From empirical tests, the TM5 - TM4 band subtraction showed to improve built up area distinction for the study site. Then a 3x3 average filtering was applied to smooth the image, avoiding single pixel detection and classification. After this pre-processing, the images were segmented using a region growing approach and classified using Bhattacharya distance. Finally, the automatic classification was scrutinized and whenever necessary, visual interpretation and manual edition performed. The result mapping was verified in the field, where classification features and limits were evaluated. Map limitations and accomplishments were described, also presenting a summary of urbanized nuclei types identified from remote sensing and validated at fieldwork. The same methodological procedure can be used to map other areas of human presence and activities, providing useful information about the occupation of Amazonian territory. |
